100th Day of School

Written by Kathy Passerine

We celebrated our 100th day of school on February 16.  It was a fun day and gave our students the opportunity to show their creative side.  Some dressed up for the day and some created 100-piece projects.

Throughout the morning students voted for their favorite 100-piece creation.

Winners in the four individual categories included Austin for his 100-piece rock collection (natural materials), Gemma for her 100 cookie dominoes (edible), Aubrey for her 100-piece candy wrapper aliens (environmental), and Edi for his 100 fish poster (Bible message).

In the upper school Kaitlyn and Melania took top honors for their chocolate flag cake.  In the lower school Jonathan and Hannah took top honors for personal favorite, Gemma took top honors for most time consuming, and Shurun took top honors for most creative.

Congratulations to each of our winners, and special thanks to everyone who participated!

Stamps, Postcards, and Coins

Written by Kathy Passerine

Jane Waites introduced students at GDQ to the Leprosy Mission during one of their assemblies.   One way that the ministry raises funds is through the sale of coins and new and used stamps and postcards.

Eager to play a part, students are now in the collection business. Each classroom has an envelope where students deposit stamps, postcards, and coins that will be sent to the Leprosy Mission office in the U.K.

Founded in 1874 by Wellesley Bailey, the Leprosy Mission is a leading Christian development organization.  Working with leprosy-affected communities in around 30 countries, the ministry meets various needs including medical and educational, advocacy and social justice.

Toys for Roma Children in Shkodra

Written by Kathy Passerine

As a school we are finding ways to become more involved in our community.  In January, David Hosaflook, one of our parents, shared with our students about the devastation of the flooding in Shkodra.  Mr. Hosaflook specifically mentioned the need for toys for the Roma children.

Over the past few weeks, our GDQ families have been generously bringing toys to the school.  We now have nearly 500 toys, including more than 100 toy cars and trucks and more than 100 stuffed animals.

Late February/early March our upper school student council members are looking to travel to Shkodra to visit one of the schools in the affected area.
